Research Professor Dinesh Thapa of the College of Pharmacy wins the 'Moheon(茅軒) Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards'
[June 21, 2010]
An international student from Nepal came to Korea 4 years ago with the hope to continue researching in a better environment, and then acquired a PhD and became a research professor, and finally won the 'Young Scientists Awards'.
He is Dr. Dinesh Thapa (31, photo), who is currently working as a research professor at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy. Recently, he became the first winner of the 'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards'.
The 'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards' is an award made at the personal expense of honorary professor Lee, Seung-gi, who retired from the Seoul National University College of Pharmacy, to foster young scientists. The award is granted to young scientists in graduate school or post-doc researchers who have published an outstanding thesis. Dr. Thapa received the honors at the awarding ceremony at the 20th anniversary symposium of the Bio-Pharmacy Research Association on the 16th.
Dr. Thapa, who studied at the national Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu), which is Nepal's best university, enrolled at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy PhD program in September 2006. Prior to coming to study abroad, he had a managerial position at the brand development department of a beer company in Nepal, and rather than taking a high salary and stable lifestyle, he chose to become a researcher. And by the time he received his PhD in December 2009, he published over 10 theses in SCI and SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) level international journals on research of colon cancer. This resulted in him being hired as a research professor at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy in March and also winning the Young Scientists Awards.
He is currently studying vascularization in the cancer cell metastasis process, and his dream spend his life researching the bio-pharmacy sector. However, he is planning to suspend his research temporarily next month and return to his home country. He is going to wed his fiance who has stood by his side waiting for the past 4 years.
He was happy to give his wife a meaningful wedding gift and said, "I am ever-more honored because this award is from private funds given by veteran professors in pharmacy and bio-science sectors to foster younger scientists." He added, "I am able to receive this honor because of my colleagues and under-classmen that have shown the best teamwork in a family-like environment in the lab, and Professor Kim, Jung-ae, who always demanded our very best."

Professor Kim, Jung-ae (College of Pharmacy), who guided him as he wrote his PhD thesis, stated, "It's become a problem that the younger generation of Korea are increasingly avoiding natural sciences or engineering majors, so I hope that the success story of Dr. Thapa who gave up his guaranteed lifestyle in search of his dreams will be know far and wide so that talented students will study in natural sciences or engineering."
