Raising ‘Green Energy’ and 'LED-IT' Industry Related Specialists
[2009-9-2]
Yeungnam University(President Lee, Hyo-Soo) will invest 66 million US $ for the next 5 years to raise 'Green Technology'(GT) specialists.
Yeungnam University promoting 'Global Frontier 10-3-10' strategy to be ranked in the top 10 globally in 3 fields within 10 years takes aim at prior occupation in the field of ‘Green Growth' through a convergence among associated studies as part of this effort. Such strategy has gotten more accelerated after recently securing about 60 million US $ of state funds just in the field of GT.
First of all, Yeungnam University was selected as supervising university of 'Megapolis Economic Bloc Leading Industry Human resource Raising Project' sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Minister Ahn, Byung-Man) and Korea Research Foundation (Acting Chief Director Bae, Kyu-Han). Accordingly, the Yeungnam University that has secured 2.5 million US $ in government funds for 5 years from now could concentrate on raising specialists in the field of 'Green Energy' industry which is the leading industry of Daegu-Gyeongsang Province area.
New Establishment of ‘Major of Interdisciplinary study for Green energy’
Dispatches Oversea Training to the Global Research Institutes
Accordingly, Yeungnam University is planning to develop an education and research program on demand for Green Energy Industry while spreading excellent models based on 'Daegu-Gyeongsang Megapolis Economic Bloc Green Energy Leading Industry Talent Raising Center' (Director Lee, Tae-Jin, School of Display and Chemical Engineering). Especially, Yeungnam University is planning to newly establish a 'Major of Interdisciplinary study for Green energy' where School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Display and Chemical Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering (Major of Mechanical Advanced Engineering) and Department of Physics participate. Through this, Yeungnam University is planning to cultivate the specialists on convergence in green energy industry.
At the same time, it is planning to support 30 unemployed graduates each year to work as an intern at a green energy industry for at least 6 months and promote a program to overcome miss-match between universities and industries such as the industrial-education cooperative course which undergraduate students participate in. It is also planning to provide oversea training opportunity for distinguished students by concluding an agreement with green energy specialized research institutes of top global standard in Florida and Australia, etc. In addition, the university plans to define the position as birthplace of green energy industry specialized talents representing our country as well as the Daegu-Gyeongsang Province area such as operating special language programs to raise engineering pupils who also possess foreign language skills.
Establishment of Combined Master's & Doctoral Program of LED-IT Industry
Also, Yeungnam University has induced huge amount of 3.5 million US $ in government funds for 5 years by being selected to 'LED/IT Convergence Research Center' (Director Jang, Ja-Soon, School of Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering & Computer Science) which is under promotion by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy since beginning of June. Yeungnam University that has invited to set up one of the 3 key centers nationwide (metropolitan area, southeast area, southwest area) is expecting to form 'a top 3 LED Convergence Industrial Complex Worldwide' and 'Northeast Asia LED Convergence Industry Hub' by producing components of LED-IT associated industries domestically, securing convergence-type original technology and accelerating commercialization of technology, etc.
Accordingly, Yeungnam University will raise specialists in the field of 'LED-IT Convergence Industry' and lead the industrialization by investing a total of 3.95 million US $ including government funds within 5 years. As a part of such effort, it will establish related curriculums as major courses from semiconductor property to the field of LED convergence, and make students become familiar with fieldwork by mandatory completion of internship courses connected with enterprises in order to 'establish an infrastructure to cultivate undergraduate workers possessing an active-style practical work ability'. In addition, it is planning to appoint professors and specialists from enterprises as specialized instructors in order to teach students practical knowledge and, in result, to raise the employment rate.
For the 'specialized education', it is planning to double the research power of specialized researchers by supporting them to learn the cutting-edge technology as well as to establish special education courses concerning the core knowledge and technology in each industrial fields for the undergraduate students. Especially, it plans to promote a human resources nurturing programs which are demanded by enterprises. At the same time, it is to establish 'LED major' in the graduate school and develope specialized curriculums related to LED convergence industry. In addition, it will establish an internal education course within the enterprises for employees in the field of research and production to acquire LED related information and latest technology.
Besides, it is planning to establishing a curriculum or seminar related to LED basics and convergence technology periodically as well as developing and supplying teaching materials related to latest technological trend after building up an instructor team with domestic and foreign specialists while securing the related facilities and educational materials at the same time so the theoretic education an practical education can be performed satisfactorily.
Establishment of ‘HR Raising Cooperation Center’
Meanwhile, Yeungnam University is also planning to reinforce a cooperative network with Kyungpook National University, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Inha University Optical Technology Education Center and Korea Photonics Technology Institute. 'LED-IT Convergence Research Center' will play a role as a central axis on that network. As a part of such effort, Yeungnam University is planning to build up a cooperative system such as sharing educational program also with nationwide optical worker raising center while promoting to raise workers of LED related major in which Kyungpook National University and Kumoh National Institute of Technology will take part.
