The 'Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo universities e-Learning Support Center (director Gwang-su Sung, hereinafter 'e-Learning Support Center)' operated by Yeungnam University was scored the nation's best.
According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (minister Byeong-man Ahn, hereinafter 'MEST'), after evaluating the 2008 performance of e-Learning Support Centers in 10 universities across the nation, Yeungnam University was ranked 'Best'. In result, Yeungnam University will be provided with funding worth 115 million won for developing contents.
Evaluation was conducted on a total of 35 indexes in 5 different evaluation areas such as strategy, organization, contents, operations and consortiums. Results showed that Yeungnam University had outstanding facilities such as the 3D virtual reality studio, high financial independency and the highest level of joint use of the system. In addition, it was judged to have outstanding performance because it had driven the credit exchange with other universities and institutes in order to improve utilization of contents and because it had developed contents fitting to the various studying types such as simulation, repeated studying and lecturing.
In particular, its high assessment was because of the school taking the initiative in the military service credits through internet courses for soldiers in uniform. Furthermore, it placed great efforts to develop and operate customized contents based on industry-academic cooperation by binding an 'e-Learning Technology Agreement' with Gumi Samsung Electronics, and it developed the contents called 'Facts About Dokdo' together with the province of Gyeongsangbukdo in both Korean and English. It also received the highest scores for the e-Learning institute certification screening sponsored by the Korea U-Learning Association in 2008.
The e-Learning Support Center director, Professor Gwang-su Sung (School of Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering and Computer Science, 43) at Yeungnam University stated, "These are the results of our efforts to become a central base for promoting customized education services fitting to the ubiquitous era by constructing online lifelong learning systems and OJT (On-the-Job Training) education systems with businesses". He added, "This year our goal is for 'globalization of e-learning' and we will focus on developing history and cultural contents, supporting language selection functions for contents, standardizing contents, global e-learning course development such as understanding Korean language, Korean culture and Dokdo."
Meanwhile, since opening its first internet courses in 1998, Yeungnam University has recently been opening an average of 120 internet courses per a semester in order to provide educational services that surpasses time and space. In July 2005, it was selected as an administering university for 'Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo university e-Learning Support Center' by MEST, and it is pursuing the 'e-Learning Cluster Construction Project' to share credits with 40 universities in the region.
