Introduction

The educational objective for this department is to prepare creative and capable Korean language teachers who can teach secondary school students diligently and be innovators in their field.

Students develop the professional attributes of a teacher and learn a wide range of general knowledge while specializing in their major field of study so that they can put theory into practice at educational institutes.

History

The Department of Korean Language Education was established in 1983 with the goal of preparing secondary school Korean Language teachers. As of February 2014, it has had a total of 940 graduates.

Job Prospects

In step with the objectives of our department, the main career path for our students after graduation is becoming teachers at secondary schools. Approximately 30 students graduate every year making a total of 634 students who have graduated over the past 30 years, of which approximately 45% have gone on to become teachers (a high percentage for this occupation which consists of over 80% women). In addition, there are many others who work in fields related to education.

Upon completion of their studies, which provide them with systemized knowledge and a broad understanding, our graduates can enter various fields such as academia, the public service sector, publishing, the press, and business.

Curriculum
1-1	KOREAN HISTORY This lecture treats total Korean history internationally and help Koreans to have necessary knowledge and to establish their own identity in order to play in a global socity. This lecture is formed to assist people who study history for entering various government's organizations and large companies or Korean history cerification test.
1-1	SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.
1-1	UNDERSTANDING OF LITERATURE The object of this course is to teach the practical methods for the understanding ofliterary works(the poetry, the novel, and the drama). Students will first acquire the basic knowledge of the literature. While reading many of literary works in class, students will improve their ability of appreciation and analysis of the literary works in general.
1-1	INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION This course is an introductory course in Education for prospective teachers, regardless of their major and/or special subjects. This is one of the necessary requirements for teacher candidates being educated in colleges other than the college of education in Korea. The course is to study the various paradigms and concepts of education, representing different views on aim, content and method of education. A particular emphasis is given to identifying theoretical questions of education in order to grasp the problems of Korean education and find out their solutions.
1-1	INTRODUCTION TO KOREAN LITERATURE To overview the properties of the fields, genres and major phenomena in Korean Classic Literature, and to search for the studying methods of it.
1-1	UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGE AND KOREAN This course provides a systematic approach to the study of Linguistics. In this course, Students study a relation of language and society, language and culture, and acquire basic and general knowledge of the sub-division of linguistics, for example phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics.
1-2	CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."
1-2	SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.
1-2	SOFTWARE AND AI Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.
1-2	READINGS IN MODERN KOREAN NOVEL By close-reading Modern Korean novels, students of this class are supposed to learn about the main stream of Modern Korean novels as well as grasp the concrete features of individual novels.
1-2	READINGS IN MODERN KOREAN POETRY This course covers reading major works by modern Korean poets and understanding the meaning of the works in the history of Korean modern poetry. The format of the course will be mixture of lecture and discussion, writing and presentation.
1-2	INTRODUCTION TO KOREAN LINGUISTICS This course provides a systematic approach to the study of Korean language by means of which students acquire basic and general knowledge of the sub-division of Korean linguistics, for example phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics.

2-1	DIGITAL EDUCATION This course addresses the understanding and practice of digital and Al education that future pre-service teachers must know, by learning the concepts and principles of digital and Al, and the reflective and critical perspective on the proper use and ethical practice of digital and Al technologies. This course also focuses on expanding digital and Al experiences in the educational field by understanding the concept of digital and Al convergence and ut1l1zation education that can enhance the effectiveness of education and by encountering related cases.
2-1	EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION & MANAGEMENT This course is an introductory course in the Educational Administration and School Management for prospective teachers. This is one of the necessary requirements for teacher candidates being educated in colleges other than the college of education. The course is to study the classical organizational thoughts in relation to education, definitions, basic concepts, and hypotheses regarding educational administration, major tasks and process of educational administration, and theories of administrative behaviors, and to understand the school and classroom management.
2-1	PREVENTION OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND UNDERSTANDING OF SCHOOL CULTURE Students will acquire an understanding of the various factors, actual state, the legislative system of school violence. Students will have an opportunity to relate this knowledge about prevention and measures of school violence to school environment using students guidance, parents interview, and human lights education. This information about violence behavior, student cultures, counseling methods, and the implications that social and contemporary legislative policies play will create greater understanding in the field of school violence.
2-1	KOREAN PHONOLOGY This course deals with Introduction to basic conception of Korean phonology. And we will study various phonological phenomena, for example assimilation, dissimilation, insertion, deletion, neutralization, glottalization, contraction.
2-1	READINGS IN CLASSICAL KOREAN LITERATURE To understand the properties of the works in classical Korean literature by the way of reading selected works with importance in literary history and with excellence in artistic value.
2-1	HISTORY OF MODERN KOREAN LITERATURE Students of this class learn about the current of Modern Korean literature by examining the historical aspects of the major writers and literary works of Modern Korean literature according to each literary genre.
2-1	METHODOLOGY OF KOREAN EDUCATION This course covers theories of Korean language and literature education. This course also covers the goals, contents, methods and materials of Korean language education. The format of the course will be mixture of lecture and discussion, writing and presentation.
2-1	READINGS IN HISTORICAL MATERIALS OF KOREAN LANGUAGE This course gives students the research ability of Korean Language by reading an important and historical documents and data.
2-2	EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY This course is an introductory course in the Educational Psychology for prospective teachers being educated in colleges other than the college of education in Korea. It is an undergraduate course to help prospective teachers understand the basic principles of psychological processes involved in the various aspects of educational practices. It includes learner? characteristics, educational environment, learning and instruction, and evaluation of instructional outcomes.
2-2	EDUCATIONAL SOCIOLOGY This course is an introductory course in the Sociology of Education for prospective teachers being educated in colleges other than the college of education in Korea. This is one of the necessary requirements for teacher candidates. An emphasis is given to the understanding of basic concepts and theories in the field.
2-2	GUIDANCE This course is a study of fundamental philosophies, knowledge, and techniques for guiding adolescents toward their better lives. It is to study the practical considerations for the growth of adolescents affective, humanistic domains. A course designed to learn foundational concepts, major principles, major treatment of guidance and counseling, and to discuss its theoretical and practical implications. Emphasis is placed on providing theoretical foundations to deal with human problems through educational counseling, and to pursue counseling theories, practical processes, and techniques.
2-2	CHANGES IN FUTURE KOREAN LANGUAGE EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT AND TEACHERS FUTURE VARIATION OF EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AND KOREAN TEACHERS This course is designed to improve abilities to cope actively with changing educational circumstances as future Korean teachers. The specific objectives of this class are as follows. 1. Take a constant interest in educational environmental change such as reduction in the number of students, multicultural education, and rapid change in the information technology society and explore the properties that are related to Korean education. 2. Understand factors that make up the expertise of Korean teachers and discuss duties and qualifications as Korean teachers.
2-2	KOREAN SYNTAX This course describes the generative principles of a sentence and the syntactic structures in Korean Language. This course studies the syntactic phenomena of Korean by using synchronic and diachronic methods. Also it introduces a teaching methodology of Korean for middle and high schools.
2-2	POETRY EDUCATION THEORY This course covers diverse theories of poetry to interpret poems. This course covers the structure and the techniques of poems, and different kind of approaches toward poetry. The format of the course will be mixture of lecture and discussion, writing and presentation.
2-2	STUDIES IN TEACHING MEDIA LANGUAGE This course reinterprets in light of Korean language education the property, operation, and effect of a language realized by various mass media. Based on this, we explore how to teach people to understand and express media languages. Additionally, we learn how to use a variety of media language in order to teach better.
2-2	HISTORY OF KOREAN LITERATURE To study various facts of Korean literature from its beginning to the end of Chosun Dynasty, and reflect the meaning of its existence.
2-2	HISTORY OF THE KOREAN LANGUAGE This course researches the historical changes of a phonological, grammatical and semantic phenomena and orthography of Korean in diachronic methods. Also it introduces a teaching methodology of Korean Language for middle and high school.

3-1	EDUCATIONAL METHODS & TECHNOLOGY This course is an introductory course in the Teaching Method and Educational Technology for prospective teachers. This is one of the necessary requirements for teacher candidates being educated technology course for the subject matter oriented education students. A general information of the field, theory, and profession of instructional technology will be introduced. The definition of instructional technology, the history of the field, and the current trends and issues in the area will be investigated. Students develop competencies in appling media and technologies to instruction. This course emphasize the method of instruction as well as educational technology.
3-1	ACTUAL AFFAIRS FOR TEACHING PROFESSION This course is for future teacher to understand actual affairs for teaching profession such as classroom management, teaching technique, guidance and counselling, processing official documents, etc.
3-1	EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY & HISTORY This course in one of the necessary requirements for teacher candidates being educated in colleges other than the College of Education in Korea. Hence, its main purpose lies in the introduction to the general history and philosophy of education both in the East and in the West from the ancient to the modern ages. Historical development of educational system, philosophical thoughts of education, and their influences and implications to our modern education are to be understood.
3-1	LECTURE ON SCHOOL GRAMMAR The goal of this course are to give students a basic understanding of general rules and principles of Korean grammar, and to help students develop their ability to analyze words and sentences of Korean.
3-1	STUDIES IN TEACHING CLASSICAL KOREAN NOVEL To study systematically the genres, types, writers, readers, themes, writing principles of Korean novel before the twentieth century.
3-1	THEORIES IN TEACHING COMMUNICATION In this course, students will study various theories of understanding and expression, and explore the basic principles of communication, and the effective methods of teaching communication.
3-1	THEORY OF MODERN NOVEL EDUCATION This lecture explores the current status and tasks of modern novel education, exploration of teaching and learning methods, understanding of components and aesthetic methods of modern novels, and expansion of modern novel education. 3-2	EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM This course emphasizes on general principles and procedures of construction, development and evaluation of school curriculum. Students are expected to develop a sense of reality with regard to the actual curriculum implementation in elementary and secondary schools.
3-2	EDUCATIONAL EVALUATION This course emphases on the relations between school learning and appropriate types of evaluation. It includes theories of reliability and validity, achievement test construction, and interpretation of test results. Introduction to modern theories of measurement techniques and instruments for cognitive, affective and psycho-motor domain; practical introduction to the techniques of tests, such as construction of tests, scoring, reliability, validity, and item analysis.
3-2	INTRODUCTION TO SPECIAL EDUCATION This lecture is for leading students in the field of education to effective education with which students(pre-teachers) can better understand and perform the integrating education. Therefore this lecture aims to train students(pre-teachers) to develop an ability of understanding students with disabilities and of performing integrating education.
3-2	READING EDUCATION This lecture explores educational content and methods to understand the concepts and principles of reading education and to enhance the ability to grasp, reason, criticize, and come up with creative alternatives while reading texts in a realistic reading process. In other words, factual reading (central content, subject matter, text structure, and development), inferential reading (author's intention or purpose, hidden or omitted content), critical reading (perspective, content, method of expression, intention or belief), sentimental reading It is necessary to systematically understand the methods of reading (empathy, emotion) and creative reading (solutions or alternatives), and then nurture the method of reading texts in various topics, types, and fields., and to develop methods to read various topics, types and fields. 3-2	STUDIES IN TEACHING CLASSICAL KOREAN POETRY To understand systematically the genres and phenomena of classical Korean poetry by studying their historical natures, stylistic features, developments and cultural backgrounds.

3-2	THE LOGIC AND WRITING OF KOREAN LANGUAGE This course will focus on the language thinking faculty and ability to express it. Students will study the ways to express the logical thinking in Korean language culture, and investigate proper methodology of teaching essary writing.

Curriculum
4-1	SCHOOL FIELD PRACTICE School field practice is a field education subject where students actually experience the roles and functions that teachers must perform in the secondary school. In this course,students can develop their preparatory skills as a teacher by accumulating practical experiences on overall school education such as teaching - learning guidance, life guidance, class management and so on through experiences in the field of education.
4-1	TOPICS IN KOREAN LINGUISTICS This course introduces Korean studies of semantics, dialectology, genealogy and history of Korean linguistics which are not periodically opened in our department.
4-1	TOPICS IN KOREAN LITERATURE To study the definition, writers and readers, and the world view of Korean essays. To particularly illuminate the various relationships of the genre with the contemporary events.
4-1	STUDY & TEACHING METHODOLOGY ON KOREAN TEACHING MATERIALS This course introduces to teaching methods and analyzes of Korean teaching materials. And we deal with how to teach it and make a teaching plan according to education process of secondary school.
4-2	KOREAN LANGUAGE EDUCATION PRACTICE To study the definition, writers and readers, the world view, and the value of Korean essays. To particularly illuminate the various relationships of the genre with the contemporary events. On the basis of the experience of reading and interpretation, look for the literary educational value and adaptation of Korean essays.
4-2	SEMINAR IN TEACHING GRAMMAR This course gives students the research ability of Korean and Korean linguistics by studying deeply an important phenomena of Korean.
4-2	SEMINAR IN TEACHING LITERATURE To cultivate the understanding and studying ability of Korean literature by the way of seminar on its major phenomena.
4-1,2	EDUCATIONAL VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES This subject includes acting as assistant teachers in kindergartens or primary and middle schools, acting as teachers' helpers, or conducting volunteer work. The goal of the course is to help future educators foster the development of educational attainments.
